IMME a partner in the European CYberSafety VI project
led by the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute
The Institute of Mass Media is participating as a partner in the European CYberSafety VI project (2026–29), which is coordinated by the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute of the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth. Other partners in the project include the Cyprus Radio Television and Digital Services Authority, the Digital Security Authority, the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology, the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies, and the Pancyprian Parents’ School.
The three-year project aims to foster a culture of digital safety by empowering creative and critically thinking citizens in the digital society. Through the CYberSafety platform, interested parties will be able to find information and use tools, as well as share experiences, expertise, and best practices.
The project is based on three pillars, with IMME participating in the third, which focuses on awareness-raising activities aimed at informing, educating, and empowering students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders regarding the safe, responsible, and creative use of the internet.
Specifically, IMME will promote educational initiatives on news literacy by developing a seminar for 16-18 year-old students on the interdependence of quality democracy and quality journalism. The seminar will examine the role and value of journalism for the proper functioning of democracy, why and how journalism differs from the content with which teenagers interact in their digital lives, and will discuss concepts such as editorial responsibility, fact-checking, neutrality, and the challenge posed by artificial intelligence.
The first pillar of the project is the Helpline where users can receive advice and support from specialized counselors and experts in real time on issues related to the use of online technologies; and the second is the Hotline, where users can report illegal content and activities related to child pornography, racism, and xenophobia.
